Hi Everyone,
Karen Howard has today sent me some photos from the Auxiliary Band end of year function.
She has some captions which she will send to me and I'll put them up as soon as I receive them.
I've put these photos up now while they are fresh as I am shortly off to Melbourne to visit grandchildren.
Good to see the Juniors all having fun. These young people are very important to the band.
Well done too, to Tanya, Bruce and Gavin working with these lovely kids (and not so young kids!).

Carols by Candlelight

Hi Everyone,
A beautiful evening last night saw the band playing at the annual Carols by Candlelight at Virginia Lake. A large crowd completely filled the bowl to enjoy the music and the arrival of Santa.
I managed to snatch some photos from on the stage so you can see what we saw.
A lovely evening- despite having to play interminable numbers of verses in some of the carols.

Christmas Carolling

Hi Everyone,
Christmas carolling is now well under way. The band is busy getting around the streets of Wanganui on Mondays and Thursdays. It is a major element in the band's fund raising activities for the year.
Thanks to the many collectors who assist in that. It is also an excellent opportunity for junior and auxilliary band players to join in with the senior band players, sharing music and being part of the same group. All very good experience. Thanks too to the drivers who pull the trailer for us.

Final Rehearsal for the 2011

Hi Everyone,
Last night was the final rehearsal for 2011. What a year it has been!! Professor David King, return to the A grade, CD Championships, Last Night of the Proms and Brett Baker concert (and I have probably missed few!) to keep our minds busy.

The singers for the Carols by Candlelight came last night to sort things out ready for that concert and then we had a supper and a few wines. Very nice too.

We have caroling beginning next week and the band's Xmas raffle tickets are being sold so we are still busy.

We have come a very long way this year. It only happens when we get a team effort and commitment from all. BUT it also takes leadership.

Many thanks to Bruce for dragging us (sometimes screaming!!) back to the A grade and to be able to put on concerts and performances at the level we have attained.

Brett and Bruce Bring in a Brilliant Brass Band Beauty!!!

Hi Everyone,
If you weren't at the Baptist Church in Wanganui on Tuesday night, you missed the most marvellous evening of brass band music making.

The playing of Brett Baker on trombone was nothing short of virtuostic throughout and in places, utterly sublime. In an evening of extraordinary music making, his performance of "Abide With Me" was for me the magnificent highlight. I count myself blessed to have been a tiny tiny part of the evening's music.

Bruce, as Musical Director, ensured that the band played as well as it possibly could with the personnel we have available and the time frame we had to prepare in- a tremendous achievement on his part and one for which he should get proper recognition.

Congratulations to all involved. It was a musical thrill, rare enough to be recounted to grandchildren in the years to come. (Well, at least, I'll tell mine!!).

(Actually, the player was me. But it's our little secret. Sshhh!)

Last Night At The Proms

Hi Everyone,
It is a busy time for the band at present. The week after next, we perform with the brilliant Brett Baker, Principal Trombone with Black Dyke Band from England. Last Saturday, we presented "Last Night at the Proms" at the Wanganui Opera House. It was a superb evening. Totally sold out with a VERY enthusiastic audience. It was one of the longest concerts I have ever played in. We started at 7:30, had a 20 minute break at half time and finished at 10:45!! There were not very many notes left in my tenor horn at the end, I can tell you!

Central Districts Contest 2011

Hi Everyone,
Well, last weekend was the annual CD Contest, this year held in Hastings.
We had worked very hard for this event, putting in a lot more focus, in keeping with our return to the A Grade and its raised expectations of accuracy and performance.

Mark Keelty was unable to attend, so his place as Drum Major was taken by the famous Phil Johnstone of the NZ Army Band. Phil also just happens to be the finest bass player in the country. What a scoop!!!
As usual, our flying euphonium cavalry of Hamish Jellyman and Ian O'Malley raced in on Friday night. What a difference they make for us. Tanya has done a superb job on her own, but she welcomed the support.

Saturday afternoon we presented our major work (Walking With Heroes) and sacred item (hymn Crimond)
Sunday held the street march (playing Through Bolts and Bars) and our concert programme (Vitae Aternum, Miss Blue Bonnet- featuring super soloist Kyle Lawson, Sleep and ending with Caravan).

In summary, we won everything. (Tieing for first equal with New Plymouth in stage presentation). This was an excellent result for Bruce, who has put in many, many hours helping to raise the standards of performance and presentation in the band.

Following Saturday's performance, we had a gathering at our motel. It was super to be able to share the motel with the Auxiliary Band. These folks are tremendously important to us so it was a treat being able to spent time with them.
They were second in all their events on Saturday. (Well done!)
In the Sunday programme, they won everything!!!! Fantastic effort, MD Jonathon Greenwell and the Auxiliary. We are very proud of you.

Hi Everyone,
Finally, we have the results. A wonderful night of music to end the A grade championship.
Woolston, wonderful Woolston, came through once more. It was a hat-trick for them. With the challenges Christchurch has faced this year, it is an even more remarkable achievement.
Woolston, we salute you!!

We played tremendously well. However, remember that we are in the A grade. The performance bar is extremely high. Overall, we came a very credible 8th in the A Grade of New Zealand.

This is how we scored:
Sacred: 86 (Winner Marlborough 92)
Test: 132 (Winner Woolston 142)
Own Choice: 139 (Winner Woolston 145)
Total: 357 (Winner Woolston 375)

So that was contest 2011. All over but the shouting and you can see above that plenty of shouting was going on and continued to go on for some time after this photo was taken.

Thanks for the support from everyone who helped in the many different ways that was needed just to get us here and then to enable us to play as well as we did.

We did not get a placing. We didn't really expect to. But we did perform to the very best of our collective abilities, we raised our standards significantly from last year and we have laid tremendous foundations for the future of Brass Wanganui.

Perhaps the most significant moment at the contest however, occurred as we went on to the stage last night. Before we had played a note, as we walked on, we received the most prolonged round of applause I have ever heard for a band coming on. It was telling us that the audience recognised and appreciated who we were. It was a tremendous moment, matched only by the applause given to Woolston- and we all know what they have been through.

Special thanks to Paul, Leayne and their various helpers and especially Bruce.

Hi Everyone,
An excellent morning! Cool but fine and a very good crowd turned out to watch the Street March through the centre of Takapuna.
We marched second to last, directly ahead of the mighty Woolston. (Now how did that happen, I wonder??? Heavens, I have a suspicious mind! The best saved to last.) And we did a cracker job! All kinds of compliments have come our way since we finished- both for marching and music. Very often over many years, Wanganui has been right up with the marching but has not quite had enough of the big guns in the middle of the band to tip over Woolston or sometimes Dalewool. Perhaps it will happen today. We know we did well, so fingers crossed.

This afternoon we rehearse at 6:00, ready to go on around 8:30-9:00 so the rest of the day will be spent relaxing and making sure our minds are set on the job. To this end, some people have raced off shopping in the nearest mall- discovered this morning just around the corner. What a squeal of delight went up when that was spotted, let me tell you! (I was nearly knocked over by a bunch of wild eyed ladies all waving their bankcards in the air. Very scary!) Others have settled for some gentle boy racer street drags, while another group headed for the calmness of the Auckland Motorway as a means to settle their nerves. Each to their own. As for me, well I will settle for some wild snoozing on the bed in front of the tv.

Friday 22 July- A Grade Debut

Hi Everyone,
Wanganui has done you proud. This afternoon, we played first in the Sacred Item (His Provision) and Test (Les Preludes). Performing to a nearly full hall (what a difference that is from the B grade!) we delivered our best possible performances in both items.
This afternoon was a significant step up in standard from last year- hard to imagine, but true! The band is playing at a much higher level than 2010. Not only did we improve on last year, but in producing our best possible performances we were left with a sense of real satisfaction. However, let's keep our feet on the ground here and not get carried away with imagining that we will win. This is the A grade and following after us came some very impressive performances. We might come last (very unlikely from what knowledgeable listeners in the audience told us) but we simply could not have performed better than we did this afternoon.
We will not know the results until everything finishes tomorrow night. A very silly system in my small opinion. Do they think we'll all run away and cry if we don't get points we think we deserve? However, that's the way it is so we go with it.

Our schedule tomorrow is:
9:30 line up for street march preparation.
10:30 ish. Street march (It is pouring down, by the way. They say it is on regardless. We shall see. We have done considerable work on the marching so it will be disappointing if it is called off as it was last year in Dunedin.)
6:00pm Rehearsal
8:30 ish perform our own choice item, Paganini Variations.
10:00pm The after match scrum.

Let me tell you, in Les Preludes, the flugal had the most demanding part in the band. VERY challenging. Rather him than me, mate! And he did a superb job for us. Again!!

Thursday 21 July

Hi Everyone,
The final day of the solo competitions and some wonderful results for us.
Kyle Lawson has won the Amateur Cornet at his first attempt, following on his win in the Junior Cornet and Junior Champion of Champions last year. This was a marvellous performance, musically mature way beyond his years.
David Maas was second in the Championship Cornet (again!). I personally heard David's performance and was thrilled at his presentation. He is now clearly established as one the premier cornet players in New Zealand.
Brent Hoy was third in the Open Soprano. Brent is a wonderful player for us. Soprano is such a difficult instrument to play. (Some say it is a pig of a thing- but you didn't hear that from me, right?) Brent is a master of it and is well established as being in the highest ranks of performers. We are very lucky to have had him move to Wanganui.
The Junior Ensemble (Keiran Smith, Brad Mancer, Tania Lyne and Matthew Huirua) were 3rd in their event, maintaining very high standards established by past Wanganui groups.

We have had another long rehearsal tonight and tomorrow we return to the A grade. Bruce has ensured that no stone has been left unturned in his efforts to prepare us. We look forward to once again taking our place amongst the highest level of New Zealand brass bands. Bring it on!

Wednesday at Contest

Hi Everyone,
Today was a busy day for Junior soloists. Our only success today was Tania Lyne gaining third in the Junior euphonium. However, having sat through every Junior performance, I can tell you that we were represented by young people who did us proud. Every single one. Some of them are still very young in their age grades and next year and beyond will see them achieve considerable results. The overall standard of performance among all sections gets higher by the year. It is a treat to see the way these super young people apply themselves. It is now up to the rest of us to perform up to the standards they have set. A real challenge for an old fella like me, let me tell you!

Results at hand are as follows:
Junior Cornet: Kieran Smith: 83 points (6th)
Junior Euphonium: Tania Lyne 82 points (3rd)

I have just got in from a quite tremendous rehearsal. The band has really made substantial progress in this last week and we will be able to compete with our heads up.
We had an unexpected visit from an old(!) ex Wanganui bandsman, Eugene Pohutawa. Some of you might recall Eugene from the days of Queen Alexander Band in the 1960s-70s. I personally first met Eugene when he joined the old Onslow Band in 1970.
Tonight, he came as a representative from the famous Woolston Band. With all their troubles from earthquakes, they thought of us and wanted to welcome us back into the A grade! How fantastic is that??? The mighty Woolston sent an ex-Wanganui man to say welcome! He reminded us of the many links between Woolston and Wanganui- their Musical Director (Graham Hickman), Principal cornet (Kevin Hickman) and a horn player (Callum Hewson) are all ex Wanganui. We have the super Brent Hoy on soprano with us. Kevin Jarrett is a life member of both bands. Marvellous stuff. His speech was very humbling an emotional for us to listen to. He knew more Wanganui band history than most of the rest of us put together. I have never heard a band speech like it in 45 years of contesting. Had we gone on to the A grade stage at that point, we would have won the bloody thing!! What a wonderful extended family is the brass band world.

But if you should suspect someone in the solo cornet section and that no one sits on his right hand side, then you might be close. But you didn't hear it from me!

Travelling to Contest

Hi Everyone,
Well, we made it here to the Poenamu Hotel, Takapuna. A long drive, filled in with some good fun along the way. Stunning weather and views of the mountains as we crossed the Desert Road.

Paul was here with the truck and everyone travelled well. A wee hic-cup with some rooms not being available due to maintenance. Never mind.

We had a rushed tea and then band at 7:00, continuing to 9:15. A big blow to shake out the cobwebs. Tomorrow, the first of the solo events. Our bus will leave here at 10. A reason to get out of bed for those of us not competing!

Pre-Contest Concert

Hi Everyone,
This afternoon, we held our annual pre-contest concert in the Wanganui Intermediate Hall. As in past years, the concert was very well attended by our enthusiastic supporters. We really appreciate the interest they take in us and the on-going support they provide.

And many grateful thanks to Whitlock's Freight, who have kindly and very generously donated the use of a covered truck, along with a fuel card, to get us to contest and back.
That is a truly wonderful gesture and we are extremely grateful for your generosity.

We have worked long and hard to get ourselves into a position where we hope we can do Wanganui proud on the national stage, once again back in the A Grade after an absence of 5 years.
Only when you attempt get back up to a previous high standard, such as the A Grade, do you really appreciate the heights you once were scaling and the dedication required to remain at that level. We hope we can live up to those traditions and expectations.

Our schedule from here is as follows:
Monday: A rest(!!!!!) day.
Tuesday: 8:15 depart Wanganui by bus and travel to Auckland. (We are staying at the Poenamu Hotel, by the way). First rehearsal is at 7:00pm
Wednesday: Solo competitions commence.
Thursday: Solos continue.
Friday: 3:00pm We are drawn 1 in the A grade (now how did that happen, one wonders!!!???) Sacred Item (His Provision) and Test (Les Preludes). Still, at least the day's events will be over and we can go and listen to other bands (or have a quiet beer- as the case may be!!!)
Saturday: 10am. Street March. 8:30pm- ish. Own Choice item. (Paganini Variations)

Sunday: 10:30 Depart Auckland.

I will up date this blog with results daily and also include photos as things happen.

Friday Night Fracas!

Hi Everyone,
Contest must be just around the corner. We are rehearsing every moment we are not working or asleep. Or so it seems! Usual Friday night activities- such as a wine or two- were put aside (well nearly put aside by one or two, especially in the horn section!) in favour of practice. And it's on again tomorrow and Sunday morning.

On Sunday afternoon, we have a concert in the Wanganui Intermediate Hall, 2:00 pm, performing our contest items "Les Preludes", Paganini Variations" and "His Provision".

Remember that this is our first year back in the A grade- a VERY big step up, after 4 years in the B grade.

This blog will be up-dated constantly during the contest, so keep an eye on it for photos and results.

Getting Ready to Rumble 2 and Tartan Club Function

Hi Everyone,
Today we had a BIG rehearsal for the contest, followed by marching and ending with a function for the marvellous Tartan Club.
With contest just 3 weeks away now, the pressure is coming on. After a long morning in the bandroom, we went out to work on the street marching- taken by old Scary Pants Himself.
Later, we met up with the Baby Brass and the Auxiliary Brass groups and played for our tremendous supporters. The Tartan Club (formed initially to help get the band to Edinburgh in 1993) meet a number of times each year over wine and food and regularly donate money to help us get to contests. A super group and one to whom we can't give enough thanks.

Getting Ready to RUMBLE 1

Hi,
National Contest is coming up and we held our band weekend on Saturday and Sunday, rehearsing 2:00pm - 9:30pm and 10:00pm - 3:30pm respectively. Very long days, but major progress was made. Now that we are back in the A grade, standards and expectations are even higher so every effort needs to be made.
Lee Martin came down from New Plymouth to play BBb bass for us (thanks Lee) and Ben O'Sullivan came down from Auckland to join the cornet section again. (Ben has now finished at university and works in the Big Smoke. Good to have you back, Ben).

The King Commands a Royal Performance - And Gets One!

Hi Everyone,
Oh what a night! However, let's just begin by making sure our feet are still firmly on the ground. Wanganui is not Woolston, Brighouse and Rastrick nor Black Dyke. This was not a faultless concert. We are still a B Grade band in reality. (We haven't yet played in the A Grade competition so it's only a paper change until we do). But heavens, it felt good delivering magical musical moments to a packed audience in the Prince Edward Auditorium!

Most of our audience was local, but there were others who had travelled a very long way to hear what Professor David King was going to be able to extract from Brass Wanganui. They weren't to be disappointed. And when it comes to thinking about the night, let's not forget the contribution of Musical Director Bruce Jellyman. Bruce delivered a superb first half, culminating in a tremendously moving rendition of Eric Ball's glorious iconic "Resurgam".

Following the confident opening numbers under Bruce, David (the 5 times in a row British Open Cornet Champion!!!) gave us glimpse of his cornet playing style with "Born on the Fourth of July" and the lovely "Dark Haired Marie", commission by our own Maestro Kevin Jarrett and dedicated to his wonderful wife, Heather- both of whom were in the audience. Under David's direction during the week, the band had had to substantially change a number of aspects of our sound and note presentation styles. Hopefully, from the audience perspective, this came through. As players, we were very conscious of what we needed to try and deliver for an improved quality of sound and style. Concluding the first half, Bruce shone through with his reading of "Resurgam", leaving us as players feeling that we had delivered a special performance.

David took the second half, opening with a lightning fast first page on "Vitae Aeturnum". The tempo is marked at 160 beats per minute. Trevor Bremner thought it was more like 190!!!! It felt like it too. My fingers don't work that fast. Personally, I'm more of a 130 type of fella- on a good day, down a very steep hill and with a strong wind behind me. I had to take it in chunks, gasping for air as we fair flew along. Move over Air New Zealand, we're coming through!! The stars of that little jaunt were David Maas and Neville Cudby. They must have water-cooled valves!!

The first of the soloists, Naomi Thrift on tenor horn, delivered a lovely version of "Over the Rainbow". Kyle Lawson on cornet played "Napoli" in brilliant fashion. Mitchell Spence, on tenor horn performed "The Piper O' Dundee" with maturity, virtuosity and musicianship far beyond his years. The final soloist was Todd Smith on euphonium, presenting "Harlequin", a piece requiring the utmost technique, which he delivered in remarkable style.
Each of these young soloists performed their items with style and the panache of someone with many years of contesting experience. It was a delight and privilege to be able to be on the stage with them. It was a wonderful credit to all involved in bringing them to this level of performance. Thank you Lady Stewart, David King and all the tutors and teachers who have worked with these superb young people. Our musical movement is in excellent hands.

Usually, band concerts conclude with an up-beat number, so as the audience can leave on a jolly note. However, true to form, David King did it his way. The blessing "The Lord bless You and Keep You" by John Rutter, which begins with a piano, never get above a gentle forte and ends as pianissimo, brought the evening to a close. It is quite marvellous music. A thrill to play, along with all the other items performed during the second half.

Selywn Holmes, for many years a Wanganui stalwart and past Musical Director, came over from Waipukurau, where he now lives.

A supper in the Rutland Hotel following the concert allowed us to unwind, make thank you speeches, share stories all over a quiet beer or wine. A truly wonderful week of music. Thank you to all involved.

Friday- Final Rehearsal

Hi Everyone,
Friday night was the final rehearsal and a demanding night it was. Last day of the working week tiredness, tired lips and end-of-week-itis made this a challenging night. However, into it we dug and gave as much as we could manage.
We rehearsed in the Prince Edward Auditorium- where the concert will be held. A beautiful auditorium, only some 20 or so years old, with lovely acoustics, it is still a new challenge to play in as we get used to the sound. We have played there a number of times before, but it still felt as if our band sound was going nowhere until we got used to it again as a change from our band room.
Bruce took the band through the items he will be directing in the fist half and then David took over for the second half items, including working with the soloists. They continue to amaze with the quality of their playing.
And stamina! Did I mention stamina? Very big rehearsals and then around 9:30 pm, out come the individual solo items. Most nights we work on them well after 10:00 pm and still those lips hang in there. Amazing work, guys! We are very proud of you and have tremendous admiration for the quality of your music and musicianship.If any of you are thinking of moving to Wanganui, we think we might be able to find a spot for you in our little band!
So now we look forward to the concert itself. Thankfully, David and Bruce have cancelled the scheduled rehearsal planned for this afternoon, allowing a little extra time for the chops to calm down. Hopefully too, it will allow us to shake off the Friday-night-itis.
The hall is almost fully booked out- an exciting audience prospect ahead of us. Thinking through things the other day, I worked out that for me, this is one of the three most memorable concerts I will ever have played in in over 50 years of brass banding. Bringing it on!

Hi Everyone,
Thursday night was another of getting ourselves up to speed, especially with accompanying the soloists. The young people have done tremendous work with David during the week and are now presenting their music at extremely high standards. If you are coming to hear us on Saturday night, you are in for a thrill.
The band continues to develop, especially in our sound and in the way we are now presenting some of our notes. We need to continue to play with our eyes on the Wizard, not just the notes on the page- a very big lesson to learn and a hard habit to break for many of us used to being page focussed.
Friday night's rehearsal will be in the Prince Edward Auditorium at Wanganui Collegiate in preparation for the concert on Saturday.

Lady Stewart is the sponsor of the scholarships for the young soloists. She visited the band room last night and spoke to us about what she loves about music and assisting bands and young people. What a tremendous lady. Thank you very much indeed Lady Stewart, for what you are doing for youth in New Zealand and Australia.

Wednesday with the Wizard

Hi Everyone,
Our week of musical magic continues. Last night, it was the turn of the soloists to be put through their paces and they were all absolutely tremendous. It is a privilege to listen to them perform and at the same time to admire the talent of such gifted young people.
The band has had to significantly lift our collective act to try and provide top level accompaniment to support these marvellous young players. We have another couple of nights to go to complete the task. Bring it on!

Tuesday Night With The Prof.

Hi Everyone,
We are now getting into a rehearsal rhythm, similar to what happens at contest time where we eat, sleep and breathe brass. Just as well, for every drop of concentration is required to stay on board with DK, to make the most of his time with us.
We have had some extra players join us for the week. Hamish Jellyman has returned from university in Waikato, Leigh Martin and Trevor Bremner have come down from New Plymouth while Neville Cudby has come up from Wellington. A warm welcome to them all. The group of soloists working with David are joining us through out the week as well. More about them later.

Hi Everyone,
Last night it happened. After all the planning and preparations the famous Professor David King arrived in our band room.
It was one of those pinch-yourself moments. This man, who has accomplished everything on offer in the international brass band world, was actually right here in our band room, taking our little band. Amazing!

And he got right into his work. Brent Toy had collected him from Palmerston North Airport, he stepped out of the car, into the room, a few quick introductions and he was wagging the wand. We hung on every note.

We instantly knew why he has won everything. He knew everything!!! Unbelievably, we then rehearsed right through to 10:30 pm. In all my years of banding, I have never done that before. (Well, maybe once on a midnight street march at a band contest, but that's our little secret!)
Luckily there are no neighbours around us, other than the crooks in the Police cells down the hill. Serve them right if they were kept awake.

Professor David King Concert, Sat 9 April 2011

Stop Press!!!
Brass Wanganui will be presenting a concert under Professor David King at the Prince Edward Auditorium, Wanganui collegiate School 7pm on Saturday 9 April.
Featured soloists will include our own Kyle Lawson on cornet (Kyle is the current Junior Champion of Champions for both New Zealand and Australia.)

Professor King is probably the world's most successful brass band conductor. An Australian, his list of successes and achievements is almost endless. Amongst them: Winning the Norwegian Brass Band Championships just 2 months ago. Winning the British Open with Brighouse and Rastrick last October, winning the European Brass Band Championships twice with Black Dye Mills and 8 times with Yorkshire Building Society. The list goes on and on and on.

Brass Wanganui Band Dinner 2011

Hi Everyone,
Sorry I have not had anything on the blog since last September.
My wife was very ill during most of last year and I took a break from band while our lives settled down a little.

We held our annual band dinner on 25 February with the various awards being presented by Bruce.
In a stroke of pure genius and to thunderous popular acclaim, the Tenor Horn section was rightly declared "Section of the Year". This was a decision greeted universally with much loud wild applause and cheering.
I have kindly inserted a photo below of the terrific tenor horn section humbly displaying their trophy.
Other, lesser sections, such as euphos and minor sections, such as cornets etc, were all in total admiration of our performances during the year and agreed that a finer choice had never been made.

The tenor horns would like to thank our adoring public for their support and wish to assure them that we will continue to perform at the same dizzying heights during this up-coming year.

Hot Brass Concert

The Band Celebrates

Last night, we held a celebration supper at the bandroom. Unfortunately, not everyone could make it but it was still a grand night with lots to laugh at as we remembered the successes we had in Dunedin.

We were able to watch video recordings, taken by one of our supporters, of the band and several soloists.
We are now working on getting the videos on to You Tube. I'll post the address here on the blog when it is up on the internet.

Besides coming up with the idea for the celebration evening, Leayne wrote us a nice little acrostic poem.
And, also by the way, she has already booked us into Auckland accommodation for next year's contest. Go, Leayne!!

The Wanganui Highland Pipe Band were so impressed with our efforts, they sent John along with a gift for us.

WE WON!!! EVERYTHING!!!!

We won! Everything!!! Hymn, Test and Own Choice Selection. Now, how about that!!!

We knew we had played well, but you can never be sure in this game until the result are in. Simply wonderful stuff. You can be very proud of what Brass Wanganui has achieved. We certainly are.

It has been a team effort from top to bottom with superb leadership and direction from Bruce, supported by Kevin and backed up by a whole host of people: from the tremendous assistance out of the Tartan Club, the parents and families who have put up with weeks and months of players missing from home through being at rehearsals and on to supporters who have attended our concerts and made us feel as it it was worthwhile. Every single player had to make great sacrifices. Thanks to all. A real Brass Wanganui family achievement.

This will be my last blog entry until after we get home tomorrow afternoon.

What a Magnificent Performance!!!!

I'm just back from the Regent Theatre where we played our own choice item, "Tallis Variations".

What a magnificent performance! In all my years of banding, that is one of the absolute best contest stage performances.

We might now get nowhere as it all comes down to whether or not the judge likes what we deliver, but even if we come last, that will not diminish the quality of what was played this morning.

Congratulations Bruce, on getting us up to this amazing standard for a B Grade band.
Well done everybody on delivering a real team effort.
Regardless of the judge's final result, the achievement is tremendous.

Now we wait for the judge to deliver his verdict.
I'm back to the hall. Will catch you later.

In the Warm-up Room

Before bands go on stage, we always go to a warm-up room first. Some are better than others, let me tell you! Today's one was a lovely large church hall just across the road from the Regent Theatre and it was WARM!!! Wahoo!

But it wasn't me that said it. Probably a cornet player, I should think is most likely to say something like that.

We Have Just Played.

I have just returned from the Regent Theatre. Nice and warm in there, but freezing going to and from!!!
The band played well, perhaps a little tentative and tense in places in the hymn until we got used to the acoustics of the hall and got really going- but it will be the same challenge for all bands. Hamish got us off to a super start with his opening solo line.
In the Red Machine, we were as comfortable as you can be in such competitive situations. The soloists all did a wonderful job, while the ensemble work seemed to fit well together. Altogether, a very good morning's work.
Now we await the judge, who might yet think what we delivered was not what he wanted to hear. That's contesting!

We don't get any results until tomorrow. A silly system, I think. Why make the bands and the audience wait, I ask? Personally, I would have the judges give a mark and put it up after we play, involving the audience right in the action. This system is used at the Olympics and other places in judging gymnastics and ice skating, amongst other sports. No wonder brass bands has such a limited appeal to many people. We can be our own worst enemies, at times!!!

By the way, the Street March has been cancelled due to the weather. What a pity after all the hard work has been done.

Getting Ready to Go

An early start and breakfast this morning so we could get our minds totally on the job ahead.

Plenty of thinking about what we have to do over cornflakes and toast.

Well, some of us had our minds on the job.
Anthony, trying to get a word in edge ways in the Girl Talk department.
Someone should have told him he was fighting a losing battle!!!

Man, do those guys have a lot of stuff. What ever do they do with it all????
The temperature here as this photo was taken is not a lot above zero and it's raining lightly. At this rate, they could easily call off the Street March which is supposed to happen later, at 1230. Watch this space!!

As we were loading there was a band rehearsing somewhere nearby. Brass is in the air.

We got Bruce a beauty first thing at rehearsal this morning. Pre-planned, as we began the warm up hymn everyone played a very loud wrong note. A look of shocked anguish passed over his face. Much laughter followed with promises we wouldn't repeat the exercise on stage.

Must away now to get ready to go down to the Regent Theatre.
